If you could see a portrait of yourself portrayed entirely through the graceful arcs of your own movements, what emotions and experiences would it reveal?
Mick Paulusma, a visual artist, and data architect for the University of Cambridge, is set to unveil his debut solo print exhibition Encircle, an extraordinary display which alludes to his personal journey in recovering from and living with depression. Paulusma introduces an innovative technique that merges his extensive background in both art and technology, a method he meticulously refined during his Master’s degree at the Cambridge School of Art. The result is a collection of mesmerizing gesture portraits, each a testament to the profound power of human connection.
Echoes of futurism and American figurative expressionism resound in his work but there is also here an entirely new approach to capturing both time and space in a single image. As Paulusma explains, “I wanted to emphasise the softness and emotionality than can be created because of (not despite) the digital workflow. My use of computers is like that of any effective collaboration; it does not overwhelm the process but is a partner that brings its own perspective and even subjectivity.”
His recent show at Anglia Ruskin University’s Ruskin Gallery as part of his MA degree show Touchdown included two of these pieces at human scale. In Encircle, Paulusma will present this work ‘in the round’, as a series of prints in which the ‘Embrace’ is posed in many angles radiating warmth at the heart of the space.
Join us in celebrating the transformative power of the human embrace and explore the profound beauty concealed within our movements. Encircle will be on display from 22nd January to 5th March 2024 at Hot Numbers Coffee / Dale’s Brewery in Cambridge. For more information about the artist and his work, please visit mickpaulusma.com.
